B.J. Novak was born on 31 July 1979 in Newton, Massachusetts, USA. He is the son of William Novak, a noted ghostwriter. His father is the co-editor of ‘The Big Book of Jewish Humor’. He is elder to his brothers Jesse and Lev. Jesse was a member of ‘Olde English’, a sketch comedy group, and he is now an electronic music composer. Novak spent his childhood in Newton and he was acquainted with John Krasinski in those days. Both of them grew together in Newton, and played baseball in Little League. They have graduated together from Newton South High School. After their high school, both of them saw each other only by chance. After this, Novak went to Harvard University and majored in English and Spanish literature. While applying for admission in the university he expressed his intensions to write for the magazine of the university, ‘Harvard Lampoon’. He wrote for it later on, and also participated in stage with his fellow student, B.J. Averell, in a variety show called ‘The B J Show’ in those days.
After graduation from the Harverd University, he moved on to Los Angeles in 2001. He started doing comedy in clubs. He performed for the first time, live on stage at the Hollywood Youth Hostel on 10 October 2001. Then he got himself attached to The Improv, a Los Angeles comedy club. He has written for a short-lived show ‘Raising Dad’. Since then he has also performed in Comedy Central’s ‘Premium Blend’ and ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’.
His started his acting career from the show ‘Punk’d’ on MTV, where he was the lead associate of Ashton Kutcher in the second season of the show. He has played pranks on Hilary Duff, Usher, and Mýa on this show. He has also worked on another TV show ‘The Office’. He has acted, written and had co-executive produced the series. He has also acted in some films like ‘Unaccompanied Minors‘, ‘Reign Over Me‘, and ‘Knocked Up‘. In 2003, he was named as Variety’s one of ‘Ten Comedian’s To Watch’.
He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2007 and 2008 for Outstanding Comedy Series for ‘The Office‘. He won the Screen Actors Guild Awards, in 2007 and 2008 Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for “The Office“. He was a nominee for the same award, for the same category, and for the same show in 2009. He won the Writers Guild of America Award in 2007 for the Comedy series for ‘The Office’. He was nominated for the same award under the same category in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He was also a nominee for the Prism Award - 2009 for Performance in a Comedy Series for ‘The Office’.

He was once arrested for fraud after it was learnt that he was reporting his sales as twice, the actual numbers in a false manner, to mislead the shareholders. He was later released and sentenced community service. He has been in numerous relationships with his co-workers.
