Idris Elba was born on 6 September in Hackney, London, England. He is a Sierra Leonean, and a Ghanaian descendant, as his father is from Sierra Leon, and his mother is from Ghana. He was married to Dormowa Sherman, a Librarian actress, writer and dancer. The couple has a daughter and he lives in Atlanta to remain close to his ex-wife and his daughter. He was announced to be an Anti- Crime Ambassador in April 2009.
He helped in his uncle’s wedding business at the age of fourteen, which helped him to open his own DJ Company in the next year. He left the school and joined the National Youth Music Theatre at the age of 16. He had to go through hard times, and he took up jobs varying from tyre fitting to cold-call advertising sales, so that he could earn for his rent, though he was having a role in the ‘Crimewatch‘. He also worked as a DJ in nightclubs under the name of Big Driis. Later, he also worked in the Ford Factory, Dagenham (London), in the night shift. He was quite interested in acting right from his High School days.
He started acting in the British TV series ‘Bramwell‘ in 1995. He was first credited for his supporting role in an episode of ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, which was a British series. He then started getting supporting roles in many British series such as ‘The Bill’, ‘Degrees of Error‘, ‘The Governor‘, etc. Slowly he started getting even better roles in shows like ‘Family Affairs’, ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Dangerfield’, ‘Inspector Lynley Mysteries’ etc. He acted in a film ‘Buffalo Soldiers’ which did not run long in theatres. Then he made his appearance for the music videos for Fat Joe and Angie Stone. He has appeared in a supporting role in an episode of ‘Law and Order’ and later he starred in ‘The Wire’.
Essence magazine has featured him as one of the “Ten Hottest Men on the Planet” in April 2004 and November 2005 issues. He played “Rev. Frank” in ‘The Gospel’. He acted in a HBO film ‘Sometimes In April‘ as “Captain Augustin Muganza“, the film was about Rwandan Genocide.
He has recorded the four song EP Big Man for Hevlar records. He was a co-producer of the ‘American Gangster’, a Jay z’s album. He played a lead role in ‘Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls‘ and a supporting role in ‘28 Weeks Later’. In 2007, he was seen in the ‘Black Men: The Truth’.
