Phyllis Smith was born on 10 July 1951 in Lemay, Missouri, outside St. Louis. She earned a degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. She worked as a cheerleader for St. Louis football Cardinals also as a burlesque performer during 1970s and 1980s. She performed at various place in the country with Vaudeville Burlesque Show, Able’s Baggy Pants Burlesque and the Mercer Brother Show. She was also a ballet and jazz dancer. After suffering from a knee injury, she left dancing.
She acted in ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’, ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With’. She is best known for playing the role of Phyllis Vance (nee Lapin) in ‘The Office’. She appeared on ‘Celebrity Family Feud’, along with the cast of ‘The Office’ on 24 June 2008.
She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2007 and 2008 and was nominated for the same in 2009. The category was Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and the show was ‘The Office’.
